BMW i8 - Powerful Idea Commercial

In this skin-tingling BMW i8 commercial the writing may not be mindblowing, but the acting is superb and lends to the incredible vibe of the spot. The car is a great blend of performance, technology, and design and this spot certainly makes you feel it.

Best of, 2013 Super Bowl Commercials

Yes, the Niners lost and it's cause for all of us San Franciscan natives to be upset for days, but their 5 minutes of post-power outage rampage was enough for me.

Unfortunately, streaming the 'bowl live on CBSsports.com came with one serious drawback: terrible ads.  The network sold digital content separately from broadcast, and it was... terrible.   But, working in the ad business, I spent the evening looking through all of the commercials that aired during the Super Bowl.

Here are my two favorites (I know, there aren't enough 'best of' Super Bowl commercial blog posts).

The first is a favorite because of its dumb and simple 'masculine humor.'  Coming from a brand we haven't seen anything from for a long, long time... it was refreshing to see such an entertaining spot.

My second favorite was widely regarded as one of the best... Ram's 'Farmer' commercial.  I don't usually like to jump on bandwagons, but this spot was great.  The stern, authoritative VO really brought the gravity of the message to life.

Here's a little history on the spot from Huffington Post:

One of the most memorable commercials of the 2013 Super Bowl was Ram Trucks' "Farmer," a simple slideshow of photographs accompanied by a stirring tribute to America's farmers that featured the recurring phrase, "So God made a farmer."

It turns out the scratchy audio in the commercial came from a speech given by radio personality Paul Harvey at the 1978 National Future Farmers of America Convention, an annual meeting held by the National FFA Organization, an agriculture education group founded in 1928.

The Ram commercial begins with a bleak photograph of a single cow in front of a snowy field, and Harvey's voice says, "And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, I need a caretaker. So God made a farmer."

The ad shows Harvey's name in the first frame.

Wideroe - Grandpa's magic trick - english version

A touching ad for Norwegian Airline, Wideroe.  A boy begs his grandfather to show him a magic trick.

Old Milwaukee | Field Cut Off | Will Ferrell

One of the funniest commercials I have ever seen.  It ran during the Super Bowl in the 2nd smallest TV market in the United States (the media buy cost only $1,500 as opposed to the millions it cost in the top markets).  Will Smith's comedic genius as well as great creative work lend themselves to make this greatness.

AXE Susan Glenn Commercial

A great ad that shows Axe's change of tone.  Susan Glenn Axe commercial.

A great print ad by Audi.  In case you didn't know, snails don't react well to salt... Lane Assist to the rescue.

Google Making $100,000,000 on Ads Everyday? Infographic

Ever wonder how much google makes per day in ad revenue?  Well, the answer is $100 million dollars, and this is how...

What I find most interesting is the top industries and companies within those industries who advertise on google.  University of Phoenix is the #1 advertiser on google?  Damn, hopefully a lot of people get an online education.

Here's an (extra) large infographic, a bit too excited to fit on the page for you to enjoy!

Wieden + Kennedy Seeks Help on Old Spice in Crazy, Epic Job Listing One week, 10 insane social challenges

Wieden + Kennedy's Old Spice campaign is a hallmark for epic weirdness in advertising. So, it stands to reason that you'd have to complete some kind of weird, epic quest to join the agency's Old Spice. Now, we know the exact parameters of that question. On Monday, W+K posted a help-wanted ad on its website seeking a social strategist on the Old Spice account. Beginning today, the posting says, applicants will have a week to complete "one or more of the challenges listed below" and then create a "case study presentation deck outlining what you did and why it was effective." Here are the challenges:

• Challenge 1 - Create the best original Pinterest board dedicated to the sport of inline speed skating (NOT roller-hockey).

• Challenge 2 - Create and post an original piece of content to Reddit that then receives the most upvotes in a single week.

• Challenge 3 - Create and upload to SlideShare an original, in-depth competitive analysis of the Ed Hardy social media ecosystem.

• Challenge 4 - Get the most people to friend your mother or your father (or a parent-like figure in your life) on Facebook in a single week.

• Challenge 5 - Create an original (new) Twitter account and then use it to get the most followers in a week using any verbs you like, but only the following nouns: "BLUEFUDGE," "HAMMERPANTS" and "GREEK YOGURT."

• Challenge 6 - Create an original YouTube video that then receives the most plays in a single week using this script verbatim:
#1: "Wait. What are you doing?"
#2: "Trust me. This will be fine."
        #1: "Ok. Go ahead."

• Challenge 7 - Get recommendations on LinkedIn from at least three other people trying to get this job.

• Challenge 8 - Create the most reviewed recipe on allrecipes.com in a single week using cottage cheese as an ingredient. The reviews don't have to be good.

• Challenge 9 - Upload the most pictures of your armpit(s) to Instagram during the course of this challenge. The pictures must have your face in them to verify your identity and include the hashtag #mypits.

• Challenge 10 - Using Quora, give thought-out, meaningful answers to as many dream catcher-related questions as possible in a single week.

As W+K says in the note: "Good luck, cyber warriors."

DIGITAL TRENDSETTERS, KARDASHIANS, AND STEVE JOBS: A DATA-DRIVEN LOOK AT CULTURE FROM NBCUNI’S “THE CURVE”

Lady Gaga? Bangs? Neon Fashion? On the way out. So are cleansing fasts, the Occupy movement and the recession. What’s in? Stay-at-home dads, Pinterest, apps, and tablets. At least that’s the word from the latest edition of "The Curve," a bi-annual book from NBCUniversal Integrated Media dedicated to anticipating what’s next in the lives of Generation X and Y consumers. (Note to Ryan Gosling, cake pops, vampires, and zombies: You’re on the fence.)

The just-published second volume of "The Curve" is a detailed report on social and cultural trends, based on data collected from Gen X and Y survey respondents, "leading edge consumers," expert interviews, and proprietary research.  This is what they're talking about, and it isn't necessarily what you'd think it would be about...

FedExCup Ad: Arnold Palmer Tea

A new favorite!

FedEx Ad: Hollywood

FedEx shows you it's the little things that matter in this action not-so-packed spot.  How do you get bovine heart tissue from Australia to Los Angeles in time for open-heart surgery?  I don't know how I missed this last year, but it's a great ad created from a simple brief.

Apple Officially Unveils The iPad Mini Starting At $329

ipadmini

Until very recently, the iPad mini has been the stuff of legend. Bigfoot, lost-city-of-Atlantis, unicorn style legend. But no more — the iPad mini is finally real, as CEO Tim Cook has unveiled the slightly smaller Apple tablet on stage.

No reason to delay the deets any more than they already have been. Here’s the story:

New Apple Products and Refreshes

Disillusioned with Apple?  Well, this might be comeback time...

Apple has an event planned for Tuesday, set for 10 AM Pacific in San Jose. It’s got something to do with the iPad mini, to be sure, but there’s tons of other stuff also rumored to be making an appearance. In fact, it’s beginning to look almost like an Apple fan’s hardware wish fulfillment fantasy, so let’s take stock of what’s supposedly coming and how likely we are to see it.

http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/22/apple-event-preview-ipad-minis-and-retina-macbook-pros-and-imacs-and-mac-minis-oh-my/

Apple executives will put the spotlight on the iPad’s educational value tomorrow at its planned San Jose event, according to a new Bloomberg Businessweek report. The report cites “a person with knowledge of the planning” of the event as the source, but doesn’t go into further detail about how specifically they’ll be promoting it from an educational perspective. But if Apple’s introducing a lower-cost iPad mini as expected, the benefits in terms of institutional purchases are obvious.
